in hospital

DCHP-3 (Apr 2023)
phrase Healthcare, Media

to be a hospital patient receiving professional medical care.

Type: 5. Frequency The phrase in hospital to refer to a person's condition being treated "in a hospital" has been part of the mainstream Anglo-Canadian lexicon for nearly two hundred years, as evidenced by the record of its usage in Toronto's The Globe newspaper (see the 1850 and later quotations).
Chart 1 shows its prevalence in the British Isles and South Africa, as well as in Canada. In the North American context when not used adjectivally (e.g. for in-hospital treatment), in hospital is a linguistic marker of Canadian English by virtue of frequency that is rooted in the Preservation of a UK-related form.
